Description 1865 50C PR65+ Cameo NGC. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. M.L. Beistle listed two proof variants in his masterful 1929 reference on half dollars. The more frequently encountered variety is seen on this piece. It shows the date centered and slanting down slightly with the left base of the 1 over the space between two denticles. This splendidly preserved Cameo proof is among the finest known of this low-mintage (500 pieces) date. Illimitable depth of reflectivity is seen in the fields, setting up strong contrast against the lustrous devices. Even rings of russet and blue toning encircle the rims and frame the completely brilliant interiors of each side. Census: 6 in 65 (2 in 65+) Cameo, 12 finer (9/13). Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $12.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $9,987.50 .
