1875 50C PR66 Cameo NGC. WB-101. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Only 700 proof Seated Liberty half dollars were struck in 1875, making the date scarce-to-rare in all grades today. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert only identified one major die variety for this date. Walter Breen noted that the reverse die, with an area of unfinished surface between the arrowheads, was used previously in 1873. Martin Luther Beistle reported another variety, with a doubled date, but that feature has not been observed by recent researchers. This coin features sharply detailed design elements and deeply mirrored fields that contrast noticeably with the frosty devices. A few hints of cerulean-blue and golden-tan toning enliven the well-preserved surfaces. Census: 7 in 66, 6 finer (9/13). Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $4.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
