1873 $1 PR63 NGC. The 1873 proof Seated Liberty dollar claims a mintage of just 600 pieces, making the issue scarce-to-rare in all grades today. It is likely that some of the mintage was destroyed in July of 1873, when a weight change in the other silver denominations took effect. According to Mint records, exactly 2,258 proof silver dollars of various dates were sent to the melter and refiner at the Philadelphia Mint to be recoined into subsidiary coinage with the new weight specifications. Undoubtedly some 1873 proof dollars were included. This attractive Select specimen is sharply detailed and deeply mirrored, with brilliant surfaces that show a few minor hairlines and contact marks on both sides. Ex: Eric P.
