1844 AU58 NGC. CAC. WB-101. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The second of two AU58 1844 half dollars in this sale. Although a common date with a fairly high mintage, this coin is desirable for the wonderful toning and near-Uncirculated grade. The coin shows attractive silvery gray toning with hints of gold and amber highlights; there is just the barest trace of friction on the coin's high points. There are only a few tiny abrasions on the reverse fields. Several grease stains, as struck, seen on both the obverse and reverse, will establish this coin's pedigree to the Eric P. Newman Collection. The obverse die shows scattered die lines into the right obverse field from Liberty's right elbow, and the reverse has interesting die cracks through the denomination and legend. Sure to please the variety collector. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $2.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
