Description 1868 50C Half Dollar, Judd-651, Pollock-724, Low R.7, PR64 NGC. CAC. This pattern half dollar is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge from the regular dies for the Seated half dollar of 1868. The aluminum patterns of this year are highly desirable. Aluminum was still considered a precious metal at the time these coins were struck. In the mid-1850s it was far more valuable than silver, while by the mid-1880s the two metals were about at par. This near-Gem proof half dollar pattern displays significant eye appeal on surfaces that are both well contrasted and well preserved, seemingly barely short of a Cameo designation. This is the sole example in this grade at NGC, although there are five Cameo-designated piece at that services from PR64 to PR67 (8/14). Part of a complete 16-piece aluminum proof set. Ex: Treasury Secretary Hugh McCulloch (circa 1868); McCulloch family; Eric Newman; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $6462.50. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
