1868 $3 Three Dollar, Judd-655, Pollock-728, Low R.7, PR63+ NGC. CAC. NGC and PCGS combined show only eight graded of the Judd-655 pattern, struck in aluminum with a reeded edge from the regular dies for the Indian Princess three dollar gold issue. Each side is well-preserved overall and shows attractive surfaces with perceptible contrast -- even if unmentioned at NGC -- between the fields and devices on each side. NGC and PCGS combined show only eight graded of this rare pattern issue. Both pattern specialists and three dollar gold fans should bid liberally on this piece. PCGS shows three graded, all in PR64. This PR63+ NGC example is bettered by two PR64 and one PR66 Cameo. But such certified population figures are likely misleading and duplicative: The last example in finer grade offered at a public auction was a Bowers and Merena auction in 1999, of a PR64 PCGS example. More recently, a PR62 NGC example brought $7,475 in a Stack's auction, lot 1734 (11/2009). Part of a complete 16-piece aluminum proof set. Ex: Treasury Secretary Hugh McCulloch (circa 1868); McCulloch family; Eric Newman; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
