||Hartford, CT - Merchants and Manufacturers Bank $50 18__ CT-190 UNL. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. This is the first time we have encountered the American Bank Note Co. imprint $50 and $100 proofs offered here. The issued notes cited in Haxby and the recently published Whitman Obsolete Connecticut volume used green overprints, according to that data, as opposed to the unlisted proofs here without a protector. However, since the listed imprint in both references is the National Bank Note Co., it seems logical that until now, no one has seen an actual example of this type in any form. The symmetric layout shows a bottom center male portrait, presumably custom for the title, and the first time seen by us. Above are curved titles. The ends display FIFTY DOLLARS vertically on lathe bands. India paper mounted upon new (that is, not the card the proof was originally die sunk to) card stock is noted. The cited Apparent designation is due to a Hole Punch Cancel "pull" at the lower left near the imprint, though scarcely visible due to the card mounting. Quite striking, and possibly unique.
