||Alexandria, DC - Bank of Alexandria $5 18__ DC-5 G16a. Jones & Littlefield BA05-07. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. Another historic, early American bank title organized in 1792 (in Virginia) with significant shareholders such as George Washington (25 shares at $200 per or $5,000 in 1792 specie - a tremendous investment then and in its modern equivalent). This very distinctive India paper proof was printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. circa 1818-1820. A seated allegorical female with trident and eagle appears at the top. At the bottom center a ship is depicted on a on shield, surrounded by agricultural goods. Intricate end patterns are characteristic of this imprint and period. This is a rare proof, with a few examples known to us. The quality is superior, and the margins are nice all around. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
