||Washington, DC - Bank of the United States (the Second) $100 February 17, 1830 Contemporary Counterfeit US-2 C1034. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. The Bank of the United States notes present perhaps the most complex series of Obsolete notes and are worthy of their own reference book. The Newman Collection contains numerous branch location Demand, Cashier and Post Note types from all three incarnations of the bank. This contemporary counterfeit mimics the genuine plate a bit crudely, yet these notes were deceptive in the period. At top center is an eagle. End panels show portraits, eagles and cameo profiles. The false signature of Nicholas Biddle as president is at the bottom right. The Apparent designation is due to "Edge and Internal Splits and Tears." Endorsed on the verso and showing though slightly to the face. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
Realized $493.50. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19032. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
