Waukon, IA- Waukon Exchange Bank of Randall, Calkins & Co. $1 __1861 Oakes 113-1. Remainder. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Another Iowa private banker issue, and exceedingly rare. This pairs well with the Linn County Bank note above, as it is styled similarly and lithographed with color tint by Ed Mendel, 162 Lake St., Chicago. The vignettes are adapted from period-engraved images originally prepared for the American Banknote Company. At center, Finding the Red Ear, a romantic game that enlivened corn husking. Lower left, female portrait; right end, standing blacksmith. Although a solid note, designated Apparent due to "Minor Rust Stains on Back; Minor Mounting Remnants on Back". Like so many Obsolete notes in this sale, this its first appearance at auction and represents a great opportunity for the specialist. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
