Description Rockland, ME - Ship Builders Bank $4 March 21, 1854 ME-510 G8 Wait-39. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is an appropriately vignetted occupational title from Maine. Most of the notes are rather common due to the bank's short tenure and rapid failure. However, that is not the case with the rarer $4 denomination note here. We have seen a few over the years, but the nautical vignettes and interesting layout always make it a favorite when encountered. Well engraved by the dual imprint Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York/New England Bank Note Co., Boston. At the bottom left is a wide vignette with several sailing ships. The upper corners have bolded "4" counters and arced FOUR DOLLARS supporting them. The mentioned "Rust Stains" at the right are trivial as this example presents itself very nicely. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $587.50. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19104. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
