||New Bedford, MA - Bedford Commercial Bank $20 Jan. 1, 1850 MA-880 G38 SENC. PCGS Very Fine 20. Another rarity from this title. The series is earlier than the previous and printed from plates by Draper, Toppan & Co. At the top, right of center, is seated Commerce on the shoreline. At the far left is William Penn, of course more commonly seen on Philadelphia notes. This is a beautiful issued note that was cancelled much later than 1850 with an oval "National Bank of Commerce of New Bedford" purple ink stamp on both face and back and noted by PCGS. This type is even more rare than the $1 note and is a handsome example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
Realized $540.50. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19129. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
