||New Bedford, MA - Bedford Commercial Bank $50 Jan. 1, 1850 MA-880 G50 SENC. PCGS Very Fine 20. This is the rarest denomination and type from the small cache of different notes that were cancelled later by the National Bank of Commerce of New Bedford with a purple oval stamp. Like the previous $20 note, this is from the Draper, Toppan & Co. engraved series. At the top center is a mother and child, with symbols of navigation in the foreground. At the far left is Justice with her scales and sword. This is another thoughtfully engraved note with a very faint purple oval stamp on the central vignette, and a more moderate stamp at the far left that has very little impact on the vignettes. A key note from this bank, not plated in either Haxby or the newly published Massachusetts Volume 4 of the Whitman Encyclopedia. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
Realized $1,116.25. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19131. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
