Description St. Paul, MN - Ramsey County Bank $5 Dec. 1, 1858 MN-150 G8a Hewitt B700-D5b. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. This is a final extremely rare proof denomination from a tremendous set. Engraved and printed at the American Bank Note Company on India paper proof only, for this bank that never opened. Beautifully crafted with mostly predecessor BC firm vignettes and die work. At the center is a hay wagon being loaded, under the arced title. At the lower left is Washington, and at the lower right is a charming young girl in a frilly dress. The red protector FIVE runs across the bottom center. This is Hole Punch Cancelled as prepared long ago at the ABN. To add some valuation perspective, the Treasurer of Ramsey County remainder notes known singly and in sheets have been handled by us numerous times over the past dozen years. Often individual, unissued notes flirt with or exceed $1,000 (2013 Long Beach Sale, $2 remainder PCGS Gem New 65PPQ at $1,162.50), and four-subject sheets surpass $4,000. These proofs are perhaps a hundred times rarer, and this is the first time the issuer has been at auction. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $4,700.00. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19184. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
