Description Portsmouth, NH - Piscataqua Bank $10 18__ NH-280 G48. Proof. PCGS About New 50 Apparent. This is a rare proof from Portsmouth, printed on India paper from the plates by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co., in the printer's classical style; only proofs are known from this series. At the top center is an allegory of Protection showing a reclining female with a dog at her feet and, gesturing toward the bank building in the background. At the left, titled on the bottom banner, is standing Sachem Pasaconaway ("Child of the Bear"} Sagamore from the Pennacock tribe. The chief is robed in his finery, and holding his bow and tomahawk. At the right is Washington standing with a sword. Hole Punch Cancelled as made. Noted by PCGS are "Edge Tears; Minor Paper Scuffs on Back," with one edge tear a bit longer and hinged from the back. The layout is beautiful, and the Native American named and titled vignette at the left adds an extra dimension to this subtly fascinating note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $1,997.50. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19229. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
