||New Brunswick, NJ - State Bank at New Brunswick $10 18__ NJ-350 G54 SENC Wait-1711var. Remainder. PCGS Extremely Fine 45. This appears to us to be a genuine plate remainder of a note that was counterfeited in the period and listed by Haxby and George Wait earlier (cited in Day's Detector). This note is printed on expensive, period bond paper with red fibers visible in several places from the back. That type of paper was generally not favored by cost-cutting counterfeiters. The rarely seen and early imprint of Maverick & Leney is under the bottom center vignette of the well-engraved New Jersey Arms. Above are the Gothic title and obligation. Linear pattern ends with perpendicular TEN, the left slightly larger, and the right with an additional shaded block behind. This is an interesting note from the bank's initial series and merits further study by the state's specialists. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
