Description Canandaigua, NY - Bank of Ontario $1 Dec. 13, 1860 NY-540 G2a SENC. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. Issued notes from banks using the National Bank Note Company firm are often much rarer than proofs from the same title. This is an appealing, fully signed and issued note with great vignettes and lovely color. At the top center, under the arced title, is the NBN vignette In the Hayfield showing a horse-drawn farm machine and field hands. The water in the far background is most likely the finger lake on which this eponymous community is located. At the lower left is the New York Bank Seal and at the lower right, a portrait engraved for the bank. The upper corner dies are scalloped and have micro-lettered titles within, all the details are machined using the Cyrus Durand patented devices. At the bottom center are two green dies. The Apparent designations, "Paper Adhered to Back at Right; Small Edge Splits" do not affect this note; it faces up very nicely, with the paper body and color evident. This bright note is superior to the example we sold at our 2011 Tampa FUN show auction for $1,495 (PMG Fine-12, ex: Gordon Harris Collection sale, CAA September 2000, Lot 618 at $495.00). This rarity is worthy of a bid at or in excess of that example. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $1,116.25. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19240.
