Description Raleigh, NC - State of North Carolina $2 Oct. 2, 1861 Cr. 23 PCGS Very Fine 25. One of the rarest State of North Carolina Civil War issued notes with the N.C. Inst. Deaf & Dumb, Print. imprint at the bottom left. This has always been a popular issued note, though not as rare as it was considered fifty years ago. This example was printed on the back of Bank of the State of North Carolina $4 DTL printed remainder notes (or "uncurrent banknotes" as described in Shull-Criswell) with a left central band of two perpendicular notes visible under the 1861 red protector TWO DOLLARS. At the bottom center is a dog and safe vignette, titles are at the top. At left in a wide cartouche is Hebe and an eagle. Rarity-9 in Shull-Criswell (16-50 known); in all grades it might be closer to fifty. However, this is an appealing and problem-free note, and one of the finer examples we have seen. Traditionally four figures in recent times and a perfect example for a North Carolina State note set by the traditional Criswell numbers. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $2,350.00. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19282. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
