Description Charleston, SC - Bank of the United States (the First) $20 Office of Discount & Deposit January 1, 1794 Contemporary Counterfeit US-1 C196 Sheheen-Not Listed. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is a rare and early dated Bank of the United States Branch counterfeit, filled in Charleston, printed from a fairly well-made plate. At the far left is ornately engraved DEPARTMENT on lathe work. At the upper left is a Federal eagle. There was much trade in Charleston, and counterfeits of this type likely were a plague on commerce. Pen cancelled on the face, and PCGS notes "Edge and Internal Tears; Minor Ink Erosion." There is a short, period-penned name on the back. This is a rare type, probably not to be encountered in genuine form and shows overall appeal. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $2,585.00. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19313. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
