Description Eagle Point, WI - Arctic Bank $5 18__ WI-135 G2a. Proof. PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ. One of the great titles from Wisconsin, and also one of the rarest. There is only one issued note known from the bank, a Very Good $5 example with a red protector, sold in the first Krause auction for $2,645. This proof and the following two have never before been offered at auction. Presumably, the Newman Collection examples are the only notes in private hands. The sheet configuration $5A-$5B-$10-$20 by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York & Chicago is exceptional. Printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock, this $5 proof is a Superb Gem. The Gothic title is across the center; the Washington portrait above is flanked by ethereal Justice and Plenty, who are beautifully detailed. At the lower left an Indian, one foot poised on a rock in the stream, prepares to launch his spear. Capital "$200,000" is at the top right edge. Hole Punch Cancelled, but not through the card. This is the finer of the two proofs from the sheet (the other is Choice New 64) and is among the most beautiful black and white Wellstood proofs we have seen. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $3,995.00. Newman VI (Heritage Auctions, 4/2015), lot 19391. Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
