Description Edwardsville, IL - Bank of Edwardsville $10 May 7, 1820 IL-220 G30. PCGS Very Fine 30. This series of early notes fascinates Eric P. Newman and in 1957 he contacted a local historian, Louise Travous, to discuss the top central vignette, custom for this bank, with imagery quite accurate for the time. Tanner, Kearny & Tiebout engraved this lovely note with the placid scenery and intricate ends. The scene apparently is based on a period sketch of the (Thomas) Kirkpatrick Mill, with the mill paced in an accurate location within the ridgeline, and the Cahokia Creek. The buildings at left though are likely exaggerated. According to Ms. Travous, the sketch was drawn with Kirkpatrick's log cabin behind. Edwardsville is in the vicinity of St. Louis and is the third oldest city in Illinois. Other denominations from the bank are scarcer. The $10 notes are more available and we are fortunate to offer a few of these custom-vignetted frontier notes. This is a bold note and well framed for the type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society, Heritage Auctions Internet Sale (5/2017). (Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, Realized $517.00.
