Rhode Island December 2, 1740 20 Shillings Face Proof Fr. RI-41. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. This and the following 40 shillings notes are fascinating, and perhaps unique, face plate impressions printed contemporarily on laid paper. They both boast impressive details, and most importantly, they complement and diagnostically compare to the two other denominations from the "large denomination plate" used to print those present in the Boyd collection. This is a beautifully detailed face design with intricate details on three sides, texts within the top two-thirds, and Rhode Island arms at lower left. The other "large plate" denominations (5 Shillings and 10 Shillings) from the sheet from which this and the following came may have been the Boyd notes sold in Ford III as lots 565 and 567. However, they would have separated from the Newman notes long ago, as they were paper rim mounted, like many Boyd colonial notes. Noted are "Small Edge Nicks." Visually exciting, and possibly a unique, contemporary proof impression. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society
