Description | Rhode Island June 16, 1775 40 Shillings Fr. RI-196. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 Apparent. An important note and not represented in Boyd's comprehensive Rhode Island collection. This is high grade and the rarest denomination from the first East Greenwich series. It is believed to be Rarity 8 (1-3 known). Only 1,000 notes were authorized and the type is unpriced in Newman and Friedberg. Printed on two sides and styled like several series issued by Rhode Island in 1775 and 1776. Border cuts are on three sides, the Rhode Island coat of arms is at left, and a fish is at the top. The back shows the denomination in the center of an ornamental cartouche. The Ward and Bowler signatures are bold. Noted with "Edge Splits." The paper is vibrant and the printing clarity strong. Any Rhode Island note from the period is rare in this condition; this also is an extremely rare type. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society From Newman VIII (Heritage Auctions, 11/2017), lot 28134, realized $1320. Image and description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, https://ha.com. |
