Rhode Island General-Treasurer 1777 Written Dates "March 19, 1777" $40 "at 4%...within Five Years" Fr. RI-263 Anderson-Smythe RI-9. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. This is another very rare Rhode Island note type and was clearly meant to circulate with endorsements. Printed on laid paper on a size similar to Continental Currency notes, this 4% interest bearing note was payable within five years. Arms are at left with a fancy border all around. It was issued to Stephen Mumford and endorsed by him on the back. Although not often encountered, the type appeared by chance in a Coin Galleries auction consigned by the Museums at Springfield, Massachusetts. The Boyd Collection had only one example (the present Newman plate note), that sold in Ford XV. Despite staining, it realized $3,450. Apparent and cited with "Edge Tears; Repaired Edge Split at Left." A bright note overall, more attractive than the mentioned plate note, and very rarely offered. Ex: Eric P.
