Description | South Carolina February 14, 1777 $20 Fr. SC-143. PCGS Extremely Fine 40. A choice example from this two-denomination series. Printed on both sides on thick paper. Differently styled borders enclose the text and emblem at lower right. The emblem shows a bird escaping from a cage with the encircling motto IBI PATRIA UBI LIBERTAS (Here in our country is where freedom is). The back is typeset and perpendicular to the face. Three signatures are very bold and the perpendicular one is faint. The printing clarity and emblem detail are among the finest we have seen. A top-grade example and undervalued in this lofty condition. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society From Newman VIII (Heritage Auctions, 11/2017), lot 28147, realized $1680.
