South Carolina June 10, 1775 50 Pounds Fr. SC-102. PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent. This is another large format certificate. It is very rare, s thought to be Rarity 7 (4-12 known). Issued by the "Commons House of Assembly" as noted in the obligation. These were issued only in the denomination of 50 pounds, which was written in. They were issued to a specific person or entity. Though not bearing interest in the obligation, these have bond-like characteristics. Flourishes are indented at the left, and the lengthy obligation is across. The perpendicular, ornately engraved back has spiraling and looping flourishes in the shape of a vase with flowers. The words from the motto FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD, as used on the June 1, 1775, notes, appear on swirling banners at the sides. The six signers were David Deas, Gideon Dupont, Jr., Theodore Gallard, Jr., Thomas Farr, Jr., Charles Pinckney (eventually loyal to the British), and Thomas Horry. Issued to the "Lieut. Governor." The bottom left edge has a short piece shaved off, but the note is essentially full size and exhibits excellent paper integrity for the thin laid paper. Noted with "Edge Splits, Tears, and Minor Damage; Repairs." The finer of two Boyd collection notes (the Newman plate, sold as Ford part III: Lot 819) sold for $4,025 in May 2004. We also sold an uncancelled note graded PCGS Very Fine 30 Apparent in September 2013 for $3,055. This example is on a par with that and boasts the Newman pedigree.
