Description South Carolina February 8, 1779 $90 Fr. SC-158. PCGS About New 53PPQ. The 1779 Thomas Coram engraved notes are to most Colonial note collectors the most attractive series printed and issued. The engraved plates by Coram, particularly the back, rivaled that of Europe; the front was charming. The $90 denomination is fairly available, but not in this condition. Often, due to their large size, notes in this series get nicks, fold cracks and splits, among other flaws. This note is very appealing and, for the technical grade, presents a tremendous value. The deeply inked printing is glorious and the wide margins add to the handsome face contrast. The back vignette of Hercules strangling a lion is perfectly centered and complete. These notes have always increased in price over the years as collectors recognize the supply of choice pieces being held by collectors. This example is ideal for a type set. Ex: Eric P.
