South Carolina Treasury of this State May 1, 1786. 3 Pounds Fr. SC-171 Anderson-Smythe UNL. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A rare issue of large format notes printed from an ornate copper plate. This was a five year debt certificate secured by the mortgage of land or "Gold or Silver Plate." Issued and signed by T. Jones and Jn. Postell Sr., as Commissioners. Printed on laid paper with a complete central watermark, "SOUTH/CAROLINA" in double borderline oval by "Abernathie FECIT Charleston" as an indented style bill. Pattern borders enclose typeset text in various fonts; at top is "Three Pounds" in Gothic. At lower left is a plow vignette with banner and motto HINC OPES (Hence our wealth). Very rare and not in the Anderson-Smythe catalogue. Though this is not an interest bearing certificate, neither is it strictly currency. There were 6,250 certificates authorized. Newman listed this and hence it is very collectible. Apparent with "Splits, Tears, and Minor Damage; Tape Stains." Overall the note is complete all around the perimeter and the paper quality is strong; this has better eye appeal than the description might indicate. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
