Virginia July 17, 1775 1 Shilling 3 Pence Small Ordinance "Test" or Essay Proof Fr. VA-71a. PCGS Very Choice New 64. Proofs and essays are more frequently encountered in the Obsolete and Federal currency series than in the Colonial. All known Colonial note proof and essay types might be counted on the fingers of two hands. This is an intriguing proof printed on blue fiber paper used for issued notes. The border cuts are complete on all sides including the misspelled PISTEREEN (instead of PISTAREEN) observed on issued notes. There is no obligation or text. However, this a "test" (as Eric refers to it on page 444 of his book) proof or it is appropriately an essay for an unadopted design. The Virginia Colony coat of arms is at the upper left vs. the upper right on the issued notes. The right and left border cuts are also in reversed orientation compared to those on the issued notes. This is very distinctive and fascinating. A great rarity; the only example we have seen is illustrated in the color plates of the fifth edition on page 57. The only other "test" proof like this is the Newman Collection 2 Shillings 6 Pence plated on page 444 of the fifth edition with the same arms placement at the upper left. The "Pistereen" notes have always been popular issued and this "test" or essay proof would complement a choice issued note making a superb pair.
