Description | Virginia May 3, 1779 $50 Fr. VA-169. PCGS Very Fine 35 Apparent. The two highest denominations from this series differ greatly from their companion lesser denominations. The $50 and $100 notes were printed in a much larger format on paper without vignettes. Indented style-bordering is at the left, ornaments at the top and right, and the denomination along the bottom. The obligation and date are in the center. Signed by James Cocke, Edward Archer, and Jonathon Boush. Most notes from this delicate paper series come damaged, and these large bills were especially prone to splits or other faults. This $50 large format bill is one the finest we have seen and is noted only with a "Small Edge Split at Bottom Center." This is a trifle compared to the fullness and vibrant eye appeal. Boldly printed. This is much finer than the Boyd collection note sold as Ford Part XVII: Lot 4454 in March 2007. Rarely found this nice. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society From Newman VIII (Heritage Auctions, 11/2017), lot 28165, realized $312. Image and description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, https://ha.com. |
