Description Morgantown, NC - Bank of North Carolina (2nd), Branch at Morgantown $20 Aug. 1, 1859 NC-55 G56. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A colorful American Bank Note Company engraved branch type, payable in Morgantown, from a bank based in Raleigh. Images abound on this lively layout. At the center, a farmer holds up a sheaf of hay for his horse to nibble on. Washington and {Monroe??} are flanking. The lower left shows a slave picking cotton. The rarely seen vignette of Benjamin Franklin setting type is at lower right. The title, "20" protectors, and counter surrounds are in vermillion. This is a scarcer denomination from the branch payable series. We have handled several notes of the design type, but not for this branch. Noted with "Edge Repairs; Minor Ink Erosion; Small Holes." A difficult type in any grade. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. From Newman X (Heritage Auctions, November 2018), lot 20465, realized $420.
