Retrograde 1771 British Imitation HalfpennyEric P. Newman identified this piece as 1777 on his envelope, but it is actually a 1771 with a retrograde date, i.e. each digit is reversed. The second 1 is tripled above, certainly giving the appearance of another 7. This is an extremely hard coin to grade, having the appearance of a low-grade example, and we expect differences of opinion. However, there was likely little detail when the coin was struck, and it is quite possibly the finest known. The surfaces are pleasing chocolate-brown. Ex: Eric P.
