1785 Imitation British Halfpenny, Fine Newman 50-85A Plate CoinIn his 1988 article, Eric P. Newman identified three obverse dies and three reverse dies that were combined to create five varieties. Since then, one additional obverse die and one reverse die have been discovered. Research has shown multiple marriages among those dies for a total of 10 die varieties. This is the plate coin for obverse 50 and reverse 85A in Eric's article. It is also the plate coin to illustrate Obverse 50 in Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families. Both sides exhibit attractive olive and light brown surfaces with a small circular depression in the right reverse field. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
