Image Information

Type Coin
Title Lot 15044
Description 1785 Imitation British Halfpenny, VF Newman 51-85C Plate ObverseUntil the last decade, it was believed that the 1785 imitation halfpence were produced in England for circulation in America. However, many examples have been found in old English collections, suggesting that these pieces may have circulated on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The obverse is plated in Eric's 1988 article. The reverse of this piece is far finer than the plate for Reverse 85C in the new reference, Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families. Mahogany patina appears on the olive-brown surfaces of this attractive piece. We note a small mark in the right obverse field. Otherwise, both sides are pleasing. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15044 (realized $840). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=12007
