Title Lot 15048
Description (1811-15) Planters Bank Countermark Fair Host, VF CountermarksThis is a second example of the Planters Bank countermark applied to a well-worn, cut 8 reales piece. The P.B. countermark is classified as a Hard Times token (HT-124), but it is more accurately an early American piece from the 1811 to 1815 period. The Brunk reference identifies several die varieties used by Planters Bank a means of "regulating" cut coinage in local circulation. This example has an especially well-struck P.B. countermark on the obverse, while the NOUVELLE ORLEANS / eagle reverse mark is less deeply applied and more worn. The eagle's head is under V of NOUVELLE to identify the variety. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15048 (realized $5520).
