(1947) Saudi Arabia Gold Pound Struck by the Philadelphia Mint Uncirculated DetailsIn 1947, the Philadelphia Mint struck two gold bullion British denominations, one pound and four pounds, for Saudi Arabia in return for oil rights. The issues were all the more unusual given that at the time, strict limitations were placed on the gold holdings of U.S. citizens. The present well-struck example is unworn but displays marks along the reverse margin, likely from an attempt to determine whether the piece was plated. Ex: Eric P.
