Herpers' 1857 Patent Counterfeit Detector With the Original Box This scale has slots for checking thickness and weight for U.S. silver and gold coins of all denominations from 25 cents to 20 dollars. Patented on December 29, 1857, by F.J. Herpers, of Newark, New Jersey. Housed in the original cardboard box, with external instruction letter pasted to the lid. Approximate dimensions: 8.0 x 3.5 x 1.7 inches. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
