18th Century Charles Sommers Scale Scale maker Charles Sommers of No. 1 Walbrook in London produced this iron and brass scale in the second half of the 18th century. The rectangular box with angled corners measures 5.8 x 2.7 x 1.1 inches. A mostly intact label inside the lid provides the weights for guineas and half guineas coined before 1772, and coined after Dec. 31, 1771. The iron scale arm is 4.7 inches, and the brass pans are 2.0 inches diameter. Sommers was born in London about 1732, apprenticed to his father, Joseph, in 1747, and died in London about 1814. This scale comes with one � guinea weight (Withers-2069K), four half guinea weights (W-1975G, 1998O, 2001H, unattributed) and 1 guinea weight (W-1975D). Ex: Eric P.
