Oval 19th Century Pennyweight Scale This outstanding scale is housed in a 5.9 x 3.1 x 1.2 inch oval tin box with rich blue paint and a wreath and eagle gilt on the lid. Probably produced in Germany for the American market, perhaps during the California gold rush, although no markings are found. Very slight paint loss is evident on the inside of the box. The scale arm measures 5.7 inches, and the pans are 2.3 inches diameter. Included are two � ounce weights, a set of seven fractional weights from � grain to 6 grains, and a set of seven fractional weights from � to 6 dwts. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
