Eric P. Newman Correspondence Files: Philip H. ChaseApproximately 105 pages, consisting of original letters to Eric P. Newman from Chase and carbon copies of Newman's letters in return, 1944-1966. Topics discussed include various aspects of coins and paper money, with a particular focus on Confederate currency and bonds. Chase (1888-1977) was the author of Confederate States of America Paper Money, 1861-1865: Basic Classification and Listing (1936), Confederate Treasury Notes: The Paper Money of the Confederate States of America, 1861-1865 (1947), and several price supplements and articles on CSA paper money topics. His correspondence with Newman almost immediately delved into highly specialized questions, with Newman noting as early as 1944 that he already had "a beautiful collection of Confeds and am only missing about 7 of the State issues, some of which I do not think exist..." Once the two realized they were both MIT graduates, their bond was set for good, and their correspondence continued for over 20 years, with various trades taking place and with Newman frequently lending Chase various CSA notes for use in his research. There is much of interest to be found in these letters. For example, Chase writes on Feb. 13, 1946, that: {blockquote}"Within the past year I purchased a considerable number of Confederate notes from R.P. Thian's son, an elderly gentleman, who only recently brought out from storage thousands of Confederate notes gathered and sorted by his father many years ago. Also, I purchased from him a special album with complete note descriptions and with many varieties of notes that R.P. Thian had assembled. A large number of these notes he also sold to dealers such as the Bebee Stamp and Coin Company, Chicago, Illinois."{/blockquote} A very interesting correspondence file with much to offer the specialist.
