Eric P. Newman Correspondence Files: Wayte RaymondOver 100 pages, consisting of original letters to Eric P. Newman from Raymond and carbon copies of Newman's letters in return, 1945-1956, as well as correspondence after Raymond's death with Olga Raymond, his widow. Materials are generally well-preserved. Though Eric P. Newman published his first article on a numismatic topic in a 1941 Missouri Historical Society publication, he credited Wayte Raymond with providing him a platform from which to reach a national audience. On Oct. 12, 1948, Newman wrote to Raymond that {blockquote}"I wish to advise you that I have taken pictures of all of the die varieties in Mr. Boyd's collection, my own collection, and a few other collections, and am now in a position to publish a die variety check list with descriptions. There will be about 50 photographs, natural size, which will be necessary in connection with the publication of these die varieties. The text will be reasonably short and the description of each die variety will be just a few lines. I am ready to proceed with the completion of this work at any time, and would appreciate if you would let me know if you want to use it in the Coin Collectors' Journal and devote one issue to it. If so, please advise me as to the exact size the plates have to be, so that I can prepare the prints for photoengraving. If you find this type of publication too expensive for your Journal, do not hesitate to let me know and I will give you other items of interest. I do wish, however, to do a nice job on the Fugios wherever it is published."{/blockquote} "Varieties of the Fugio Cent" would appear in the January-February 1949 issue of the Coin Collector's Journal and go on to be reprinted, combined with his work on the 1776 Continental Currency coinage, in the reformatted Coin Collector's Journal in 1952. Newman would publish several other articles with Raymond, and provide him with photographs and revisions to his various catalogues. The two discussed everything from ANA politics (Raymond: "The politics and general upheavals in the ANA leave me very cold, as I find that most of the men prominent in an organization of this kind are seldom buyers of the material that they claim to be interested in") to the upcoming sale in Cairo of the King Farouk collection (Newman: "I imagine that you are going to be right and I am going to be wrong as to the prices in Cairo. Apparently there are so many people going that ... the prices will be very substantial"). The later correspondence with Olga Raymond mostly concerns efforts to continue the publications established by the great coin dealer. A most important lot. Estimate $2,000. Ex: Eric P.
