The First Work on Civil War Tokens, Published While the War Still Raged(Philadelphia, 1863). 8vo, later red cloth, gilt. 19, (1) pages; interleaved with plain paper. A very rare and important 1863 offprint from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society. In it, Chase (1820-1886) carefully arranged an impressive 303 pieces into seven different categories: 1) Business Cards; 2) Portraits; 3) Equestrian Statues, Fancy Heads, and Human Figures; 4) Animals; 5) Flags; 6) Miscellaneous Devices; and 7) Mottos. Annotated throughout in pencil. Near fine. Only this copy and the one in the Ford library appear to have been offered in numismatic literature sales of the past 40 years.
