Remarkable Collection of Coin Chart Manuals A varied and impressive group of 28 19th-century publications on coinage issued between 1847 and 1873, generally heavily illustrated, many of which are quite rare. Lot includes the following: F. Granger Adams's Coin Chart Manual (1859); George P. Bissell's Coin Book (1873); R.L. Clarke's Coins of the World (1854 or later); William F. Davis (L.S. Lawrence)'s Book of Coins (1859); John S. Dye's Gold and Silver Coin Chart Manual (1851 & 1855); J. Tyler Hodges's Gold and Silver Coin Chart Manual (1854 or later); Imlay & Bicknell's Coins of the World (1859); Kennedy & Brother's Kennedys' Fac Simile Counterfeit Bank Note Detector & Coin Book (1849 or later); T.R. Lord & Co.'s Pictorial Safety Guard (1855 or later), 2 copies; W.R. Paddock's Gold and Silver Coin Chart Manual (1854 or later); T.B. Peterson & Brothers' Complete Coin Book (1859); S. Taylor's United States Money Reporter and Gold and Silver Coin Examiner (1847 & 1851); Taylor, Allen & Co.'s Chart of Gold & Silver Coins (1854 or later); and no fewer than 11 editions of J. Thompson's Coin Chart Manual (1848, 1849, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1859, 1861, and 1863) as well as his Coin Supplement to the Bank Note & Commercial Reporter (1850 or later). All in original printed paper covers. Most volumes quite worn, with a few exceptions, with a few lacking a cover or being otherwise incomplete or damaged. Good to very good, with a couple being nicer. Eric P. Newman collected coin chart manuals with nearly the same passion as he collected counterfeit detectors and bank note reporters, and these guides to circulating coinage were frequently published by the same people issuing the guides to paper money. Many of these are rare. Others, like Thompson, were very popular and are seen somewhat regularly today--but having 11 different editions is very unusual. Estimate $1,500. Ex: Eric P.
