Title Lot 15253
Description Heath Counterfeit Detector First Pocket Edition, Rare Newman 1-P-20Boston: Heath, 1864. First edition, no stated printing or imprint. 16mo, original blindstamped dark green cloth; front cover lettered in gilt, without price. 32 pages; 10 engraved plates of bank note design elements, with original tissue guards, interspersed in the text, with plate 6 serving as a frontispiece, plate 4 printed in red ink, plate 8 printed in green ink, an unnumbered plate being an engraved folding Heath bank note facsimile, and a final unnumbered plate being a folding facsimile of a counterfeit $5 Bank of Orleans note taken from captured engraved plates. An unusual issue. Eric P. Newman wrote of it that "This printing may be from handset type instead of stereotype." It could have been issued at any time after Newman 1-P-3, as it includes the two unnumbered folding plates, but before Type 2-P. It is also the only variety of the first edition not printed throughout within double borders. The lack of a price on the front cover would suggest that it fell later in the lifetime of the first edition. Old damp-stain present throughout; still very good. Rare. Estimate $500. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Heritage Auctions 11/2018 (Newman XI), lot15253 (realized $336). Heritage link: http://www.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=1283&lotIdNo=11117
