Second edition. 16mo, original blindstamped dark maroon cloth; front cover lettered sideways in gilt. 39, (5) pages; double-page plate of impressions of genuine and counterfeit fractional currency notes following the title; Treasury Department letter facsimile on tissue stock; unnumbered folding plate showing both sides of a counterfeit $100 First National Bank of Boston note in green and black; unnumbered folding plate showing both sides of a counterfeit $10 First National Bank of Philadelphia note in green and black; unnumbered folding plate showing both sides of a counterfeit $20 Fourth National Bank of New York note in green and black; unnumbered plate advertising Geo. W. Casilear's anti-fraud technology for checks (dated 1869); 15 engraved numbered plates of bank note design elements with original tissue guards, interspersed out of numerical sequence in the text, plates 2 and 5 serving as frontispieces, plate 5 printed in green ink, no plate numbers overprinted [plates 15 and 16 not present in this variant]; two leaves featuring four Heath microscope illustrations printed two apiece on one side of each leaf. Latest Recommendation dated Dec. 2, 1867. Casilear patent date given as Nov. 24, 1868. The rear cover stained; signatures sprung. Very good.
