Heath Counterfeit Detector Third Pocket Edition, Newman 3-P-4Boston and Washington: Heath, 1870. Third edition. 16mo, original blindstamped green cloth; front cover decoratively lettered in gilt. 40 pages; text illustrations of four Heath microscopes; 2 unnumbered fractional currency plates; 10 engraved plates mostly depicting bank note design elements, numbered 2-10 and 17 [plates 7-10 renumbered correctly, but the old 17 left as is], plate 4 printed in green ink. The text continues to refer to the three counterfeit notes on page 11, and a handwritten note has been added here stating "*Taken out by order of Sec. of Tres." Page 28 revised to remove reference to the counterfeit notes. Ads for the Banking & Counting House Edition at $5 and the American Bond Detector at $16. The suppression of the folding counterfeit plates refers, according to Newman, "to the enforcement by the government of the use of impressions made in violation of section CXXIII of the Act of March 3, 1869." Fine. Estimate $300 Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
