1738 Edition of Massachusetts Laws Including Ones About Coins and CurrencyBoston in New-England: Printed by B. Green, Printer to the Honourable the Lieut. Governour & Council, for Benjamin Eliot, and Sold at His Shop Near the Town-House in King's Street, 1726 [and continuing, with final colophon on page 644 reading Boston: Printed by J. Draper, Printer to His Excellency the Governour and Council]. Title vignette with the Royal Arms. 17, (1), (2), 644 pages, initial pagination being a Table of Contents; several blanks bound following, on three of which a handwritten index has been compiled. [preceded by] The Charter Granted by Their Majesties King William and Queen Mary, to the Inhabitants of the Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New-England. (2), 14 pages. Folio [30.5 by 21 cm], contemporary full calf; boards paneled in blind with flourishes in corners and further bordered with double blind fillets; spine with five raised bands. Binding poor, with both boards detached with a few leaves attached, and spine perished; blank at end with first two pages of handwritten index loose; front flyleaf lacking; top margin of title page torn off. Some wrinkling and occasional tears throughout, but complete and without loss to text. Good to very good. As discussed in the previous lot, volumes of Massachusetts laws were published as compendia, being revised, added to, and reprinted every so often in volumes of steadily increasing size. The laws and acts published in this volume were passed beginning in 1692, and include everything listed in the above lot, but are then continued, beginning on page 349, with laws and acts passed at sessions of the Great and General Court or Assembly of the Province of the Massachusetts-Bay beginning May 25, 1726, through the final session here included of Nov. 30, 1737 (final stating "The Four last Acts were Published January 16. 1737," meaning 1737/8 in the old calendar and 1738 in our own). The later laws and acts include the very important Act for Making Two Thousand Six Hundred Twenty-Five Pounds in Small Bills of Several Denominations, to Be Exchanged for Larger Bills by the Province Treasurer, which includes illustrations of six bills (one penny through sixpence) of the 1737 issue.
