[Mease's article comprises pages 282 to 283.] Head chipped; some light occasional spotting, else fine. Mease's 1838 article is "the first numismatic article on American coins published in America," according to Eric P. Newman (The Asylum, Summer 1992). Though brief, this work is the foundation upon which U.S. numismatic scholarship stands, and it is of continued relevance: Newman's article discusses how Mease's comments on the Bar Cent and the circulating value of Connecticut coppers have implications for modern scholarship on these pieces. Unlisted in Attinelli. Incredibly, Eric P. Newman purchased this volume directly from the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1992 for $50, it being the last available copy before the Society officially declared the volume to be out of print.
