Description 1752 Compendium of the Laws of the Province of New-YorkNew-York: Printed by James Parker, Printer to the Government, at the New Printing-Office, in Beaver-Street, MDCCLII (1752). Small folio [34.5 by 23 cm], contemporary full brown calf; spine with five raised bands; red morocco spine label, gilt. (6), iii, (1), 488, (2) pages, including list of subscribers, errata, and index; title with woodcut of the Arms of New-York; different woodcut of same arms used elsewhere; occasional woodcut headpieces. Binding rubbed, but sound. Evans 6897. This rare compendium of colonial New York laws was prepared by William Livingston and William Smith, Jr. As with the Massachusetts volume offered earlier in this sale, this New York volume includes much of numismatic interest, particularly laws governing the issuance and circulation of paper money. The June 8, 1709 act approving 5000 in indented bills of credit is included here, as are the acts authorizing the two 4000 issuances in interest-bearing notes later that year. Prohibitions on exporting specie are discussed, as is the application of the death penalty in counterfeiting cases. Currency legislation through the 1747 issues is included. Estimate $2,500.
