Heavily Annotated Correction Copy of the First Edition of Eric P. Newman's MasterworkRacine, 1967. First edition. 4to, custom brown pebbled leatherette. 360 pages, interleaved; illustrated. Eric P. Newman's extensively annotated correction and revision copy of the first edition of The Early Paper Money of America. An extraordinary volume. One struggles to find a paragraph left unrevised. The original pages themselves are amended in several inks. Longer additions are usually reserved for the interleaves, though on occasion entire sheets of new information are glued or laid in. Some of the additions are carefully and neatly entered; many are hastily written, then revised right away. In one case, a tipped-in addition takes the form of a folding sheet a foot and a half long. Beyond simple edits, the authorial annotations rearrange content, lay out plans for new illustrations, and develop different approaches to some of the more complex subjects covered. Some pages feature as many as four different inks or pencils, indicating that this was a volume returned to time and again as the author tried intensely to improve what had been an outstanding work in its first edition. A very important copy that led to the development of the full working manuscript also in this sale. The volume looks the worse for wear, given the very heavy use it received, with the boards stained and bowed and with occasional minor stains and discoloration, but this hardly detracts from what is one of the highlights of this library.
